JOSEPH AWODE

DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR

What got you into American Football to start with? Did you play any contact sport beforehand?

I got into Football at uni after I got bored of the soccer team not competing to play at the highest level. At first I complete refused to take part in such an ‘aggressive’ sport but after understanding the amount of discipline required I instantly fell in love with the sport. The most amount of contact I had prior too playing Football was slide tackling in soccer games!

What was your career like at the UniBall Level?

My first ever game was a pre-season scrimmage against Stirling Clansmen, I remember being trucked by their starting RB on special teams and not feeling a thing. It was at this point I realised that the sport doesn’t hurt and it all began to click for me. I started as a WR and quickly moved to DB where I was in my element, leading the team in tackles and picks (including a 90 yard pick 6 at varsity) and being a captain in my final 2 years. I also played QB in my final year, leading the offence to another winning season and varsity win. My accolades at uni consisted of; 3x Defensive MVP, 2x Team MVP, 2x Coaches MVP and the first and only inductee to the HOF.

Why did you start coaching American Football?

I began coaching as it was something I really wanted to get into rather seriously once I retired from playing, so no better time than now. I want to be part of growing the sport within the UK in addition to giving back to the young gentlemen, the same way in which my coaches dedicated their time and efforts towards me when I was a uni player.

What advice would you have for a person interested in playing American Football?

Give it a try it’s the least you can do, it’s such an easy sport to fall in love with and some of my teammates past and present have not only become life long friends but brothers too.

What are you looking forward to the most this season with the City Wolfpack?

Ensuring the defence hunt like a pack of wolves! In all seriousness the banter, the jokes, the laughter all whilst creating future athletes and advocates for the sport in the UK.

Favourite NFL Team and why?

Washington Redskins - when I started getting into football, RG3 was the man ... that’s all I have to say on the matter! I also support Seattle Seahawks, JUDGE ME!

Favourite NFL Player and why?

‘BAM BAM’ Kam Chancellor - Ball hawk and big hitter, just how I like it and how I like to play.
